On the "Chose how updates are delivered" page if the first option is turned on, the MS is using your computer as a "mule" to deliver updates to other people. That would account for network use. Also check in the Recycle bin, if someone was using your system and they were sloppy, there could be deleted files there "sloppy" because there is an option to delete files without putting them in the recycle bin.
